About the artist
My work explores suburban neighbourhoods and everyday objects as metaphors for experiences of existential longing and modern restlessness.My current series, 'Home,' represents universal longings for belonging and acceptance, or in other words, the search for a true home. In my most recent prints and paintings, I continue this series by exploring additional themes that add to this narrative. I am revisiting past still-life images in order to contrast the introspective nature of these works with the Home images. Everyday objects meant to evoke feelings of restlessness and isolation are juxtaposed with images of rest and belonging. My goal is to unite all three themes - shirts, still-life images, and homes - to create a cohesive narrative that describes deep longings and their ultimate fulfillment.
Anselmo Swan is a professional artist who graduated from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design with a Bachelor's in Fine Arts. Born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia, Anselmo began his formal training in his teens at Arts Umbrella.Anselmo has exhibited his work in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Asia. His gallery representation has included Diane Farris Gallery and Gallery Jones in Vancouver, Ian Tan Gallery, and Keller and Greene Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.Anselmo also enjoys travelling and exploring notable museums and art collections in his spare time.
About the artwork
My woodcut, titled "Black Shoes," was created using long-grain pearwood blocks and traditional carving tools. I also used a sharp point to engrave fine lines into the wood. The print was hand-printed with letterpress ink using a Japanese baren on heavyweight Gampi tissue paper mounted on Stonehenge paper. I employed two colours%u2014black and grey%u2014to achieve a broader range of light and dark tones. The shoes were a gift for my first solo show and have accompanied me to various exhibition openings and gallery events over the past 25 years.
