About the artist

Fran Farrar is an artist printmaker exploring memory, ancestry and place through abstract copper etching, monotypes and painting. She uses a combination of traditional and exploratory printmaking methods to interpret intimate emotional concepts through abstracted imagery. Fran is interested in an historic continuum, diarizing her own memories in conjunction with those of the natural and built environment. Her intimate, short edition prints bring together environmental identity with familial connections through a repertoire of repeated symbols and images, and often refer to transporting, nostalgic recollections. She returns repeatedly to a vocabulary of specific mark making, adjusting and refining, to explore line, light and texture across experimental printmaking, painting and sketchbooks. Fran%u2019s current etchings and associated explorations are part of an on-going practice theme considering genealogical placement, significant emotional memory points and an exploration of time.

About the artwork

Sat holding time and memories, the looming caisson structures left on Arromanches Beach, Normandy, remind us of the magnitude of events past. I can but make scratched marks in remembrance and give a small space to think. This etching is part of a larger body of work responding to the D Day landings of 1944 and the enduring legacy of extraordinary events. Links to the past through ancestry and place, recordings of so many.
