About the artwork
The Clearing is part of a series of etchings and engravings in my ongoing study of Icelandic forests. The work imagines the reappearance of one of Iceland%u2019s lost woodlands once covering large areas of the island before extensive deforestation by early settlers. It draws particularly on the vanished birch forests of the Icelandic Highlands surrounding Þjórsárver and the interior plateau, much of which has since become part of the Arctic desert. I am drawn to the idea of a clearing as a place where light enters and structure gives way, revealing traces of disappearance. The image evokes a forest that can no longer be directly seen yet continues to persist through fragments, remnants and ecological traces. I made The Clearing using electrolysis, a process I chose for its subtle tonal range and capacity for fine detail. Its delicate atmospheric qualities echo the fragility and muted light of the forest environment, reflecting on the loss and persistence of landscape through time.
