Artist statement
Josephine has always been drawn to narrative and is passionate about drawing: working primarily on location, Josephine responds to the world directly around her. By allowing the changing weather and uncontrollable factors of working outdoors to influence the direction of the work the images take on the character of the place. Since having her son she has seen a change in her work; less time for working out of doors has deepened a more intimate and interior style. She is currently focusing on self portraits often including her son, portraying the privilege and the sacrifice of motherhood. The domestic has become central, the fabrics of home the landscape, family relationships the obsession.
Biography
Josephine Birch graduated with a first class B.A. in Illustration and a postgraduate scholarship from The Royal Drawing School, after which she achieved a first class M.A. in Children%u2019s Book Illustration at Cambridge School of Art. She is represented by British gallery Partnership Editions and had her first solo show this year with Weald Contemporary. Josephine has lectured in drawing, print and fine art at various institutions and is currently Print Co-ordinator at Plymouth Arts University. She is recipient of the Jerwood 1:1 fund and the David Cantor Make South West memorial fund for Lithography. her picture books have won mulitple awards including image of the book childrens Laureate award and Society of Illustrators, NYC, winner. Her works have been exhibited and published around the world including Christies London and Tsinghau Expo, China.
