Artist statement

Christine Watson's paintings and pastels seek out the essential qualities of towns and villages of the Mediterranean and North Africa, revealing the richness of spaces and surfaces without sentiment or nostalgia. Steps and stairways, walls and roofs, windows and doors, streets and alleyways %u2013 the fabric of habitation %u2013 are revealed as they are, aged by wear and weather. Figures move in and out of the paintings hiding in the shadows away from the heat and light.
